What's happening

The community is invited to review and provide feedback on the draft Volunteer Management Policy from 12 December 2024 until 10 December 2025.

The Policy explains how Tweed Shire Council manages its volunteers.

This Policy was updated in 2024 to reflect best practices in volunteer management and is based on the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement.

Background

Council has a growing pool of over 250 volunteers across a range of different programs including the Tweed Regional Gallery, Museum, Community Care and Landcare Groups that undertake work on Council owned land.

Council has created a draft Volunteer Management Policy to provide a consistent and coordinated approach to volunteer governance, recruitment, training and management across all Council programs involving volunteers, in line with The National Standards for Volunteer Involvement.

Policy summary

The draft Policy outlines how Tweed Shire Council will manage volunteers and is aligned with the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement.

The Policy defines the roles and responsibilities of both volunteers and Council staff, emphasising the importance of creating a safe and respectful workplace.

It also covers topics such as recruitment, training, grievance procedures, and confidentiality. The policy ensures a fair and transparent system for volunteers, while acknowledging their significant contributions to the community.

Who does this Policy apply to?

This Policy applies to anyone who volunteers with Council, anyone applying to volunteer with Council and any approved volunteer-based organisations using volunteers on Council-owned or Council-managed land, like Dunecare.

It also applies to associated volunteers working on Council land and Council employees volunteering for Council-related activities in their own time.

Who does this Policy NOT apply to?

This Policy does not apply to people on work experience, those fulfilling social security requirements, or Councillors undertaking their local government duties.

It also does not apply to members of Council Advisory Committees, Management Committees or Project Reference Groups.
