Burringbar Village Character Study area

Burringbar is a village with a rich history, strong community spirit, and a distinctive character shaped by its historic buildings, green spaces, and connection to the past. To ensure these values are recognised and considered in future planning, Tweed Shire Council, in collaboration with the Burringbar Community Association and heritage consultants, have developed the draft Burringbar Village Character Statement. The Character Statement helps guide future planning and development decisions to support Burringbar’s unique charm while managing growth in a way that benefits everyone.

How was the Character Statement developed?

To create the Character Statement, Tweed Shire Council and the Burringbar Community Association worked with a heritage consultant to carefully assess the village’s defining features.

The process included:

  • Researching Burringbar’s history and local character.
  • Examining distinctive features like landmarks, parks, and streetscapes.
  • Consulting with the community to understand their aspirations for the village.

What area is included in the Character Statement?

The draft Character Statement focuses on the village centre, including the Broadway, Station Street, Burringbar School of Arts Community Hall, Burringbar Memorial Reserve, and Masterson Park.

What does the Character Statement say?

The Character Statement highlights the unique features of Burringbar, including:

  • Its historic buildings, such as those along the Broadway.
  • The natural beauty of its terrain, vegetation, and open spaces.
  • The village’s connection to its past through the old railway, roads, and walking paths.
  • The strong sense of community, involvement, and local culture.

The Character Statement identifies that parts of Burringbar, centred around the Broadway, meet the criteria for heritage significance and should be protected through a Heritage Conservation Area (HCA). This would help ensure the village retains its charm while allowing thoughtful, sustainable growth.

Next Steps

After the public exhibition, a report will be submitted to Council with a summary of community feedback and subsequent recommendations relating to the creation of a new Burringbar Heritage Conservation Area. The formalisation of a new Burringbar Village Heritage Conservation Area would require a separate planning process, the Character Statement provides the foundation for this important step.
