Landfill for community waste
This project is part of Phase 1 of the Tweed Recycling and Landfill Centre Master Plan to improve the layout and site design for all users.

The new landfill (called a cell) is the last one to be constructed on this site. Work started on the landfill cell in August 2021.
A landfill cell is essentially ‘space’ that is made in the land which is prepared, and lined with specific materials so it can be safely filled with waste.
This new cell will hold about 11,071 collection trucks of waste (that's equal to about 25 collection trucks placing waste in the land everyday for a year). That's a lot of waste that will be thrown 'away'.
With current community waste behaviour, it will only have about a 5 to 6 year 'lifespan'. The life of this could be extended if less goes to landfill.
This project will:
- provide safe, efficient and cost effective landfill management
- achieve sustainable, cost effective solutions for landfill needs
- manage waste that is hazardous or can not be reused or recycled
