Community Climate Action group tree planting

We are looking for people interested in joining a Community Climate Action Group, to enable active community involvement from Tweed residents in responding to climate change and driving local climate change solutions.

It is recognised that 10-15% of the Tweed LGA’s overall greenhouse gas emissions can be influenced by community and individual actions. While Council works towards its own climate change action plan, renewable energy action plan and adaptation plans, the community also has the opportunity to play a part in a sustainable, liveable future that protects the Tweed’s unique natural environment.

The Community Climate Action Group will agree on its own Terms of Reference, but it is also intended that the group will be invited to provide input to Tweed Shire Council's climate change work program and related activities, including:

  • to support the Climate futures: engaging community event in February 2025 to identify projects and actions that can be driven at a community level
  • to document community projects and actions into a Community Climate Action Plan
  • to lead, engage and motivate the Tweed community’s active response to climate change
  • to lead and support delivery of community emissions reduction actions and projects
  • to provide input into Tweed Shire Council’s climate change work program.

What does a member of the Community Climate Action Group do?

The group will meet quarterly or as determined by the group, on an ongoing basis.

Read the draft Terms of Reference, to be updated and agreed on by the Community Climate Action Group.

Selection criteria

Applicants expressing interest in becoming members of the Community Climate Action Group should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Awareness of climate change and its economic, social and environmental opportunities and challenges.
  • Experience with climate science, action and engagement.
  • Membership of committees, organisations or community groups.
  • Examples of action and involvement in community-led projects and community engagement.
  • Appropriate participation within the group:
    • Have access to email for project correspondence and internet access if required for video conference meetings
    • Be willing to contribute constructively to meetings in a fair and unbiased manner
    • Look beyond personal interests for the benefit of the community
    • Commit to the project for the required duration, including pre-reading and attendance at a minimum of 75% of meetings
