Council is reviewing how it provides bulk waste disposal services for Tweed households.

The service currently operates as a scheduled biannual kerbside collection and Council is inviting community feedback on a number of options for the future, including:

  • Twice-a-year kerbside collection
    Once-a-year kerbside collection
  • Once-a-year dial-up service to arrange to have large house hold items collected from your property
  • Twice-a-year dial-up service
  • A tip voucher provided with every rates notice allowing you to take one trailer load of waste to the tip for free each year
  • Provision of one tip voucher and one dial-up service per year

    Tweed residents now have a wider range of options in an updated Household Clean-up survey, following feedback received so far in the questionnaire.

    The revised survey now invites respondents to indicate their support for a twice-a-year dial-up service for residential bulk waste collection, in addition to the once-a-year option included in the original version of the questionnaire.

    There has been a very high response to the survey since it began last week and it has become clear this additional option was needed to provide a full picture of community sentiment about how the clean-up service should be provided in the future.

    The considerable amount of feedback received in the hundreds of surveys completed so far will all be retained in the final results collected from the questionnaire.

    The updated version will help us to better compare how the public perceives the dial-up option as an alternative.

    It has become clear that many people are keen to retain a twice-a-year pick-up service and this revision takes into account that sentiment.

    People who have already completed the survey might feel differently about what they think are the best options, following this update to the survey,” he said.

    Therefore, the updated survey is open to everyone to complete, including those who have already filled it out. The questionnaires are generally set up to allow people to complete them once but we want to enable those initial respondents to be able to indicated if they have a change of opinion because of the change.

    There has been a great response in the first week of the Household Cleanup Survey and
    there is still time to have your say on the alternatives being considered.

    Hundreds of residents have so far completed the survey, which is open until Sunday 5 July.

    It is important to note that Council is not planning to stop the service but is instead considering alternative options to the way the service is provided, which might offer an alternative that runs more efficiently, reduces illegal dumping and improves reuse and recycling.

    Council staff will be taking to the streets in a number of Tweed centres to further spread the word about the Household Clean-up survey and to give people further opportunity to provide their input.

    They will start in Murwillumbah on Tuesday 16 June from 1pm to 4pm, to help people complete the survey and found out more about the clean-up review and the options being considered.

    Staff will then be in:

    Kingscliff on Friday 19 June between 2:30 and 4pm at Kingscliff Shopping Village

    Cabarita on Tuesday 23 June between 2:30 and 4 on the main street

    Pottsville on Tuesday 23 June between 2:30 and 4 near the IGA

    Further locations will be displayed shortly.

    Here's a summary of each of the options raised in the survey:

    Twice-a-year kerbside collection (cost neutral - existing service)

    This is the existing service.
    Council contractors collect bulky household waste from residences throughout Tweed Shire over a four to five-week period, twice a year. There are restrictions on volume and what can be
    placed out for collection.

    Once-a-year kerbside collection (reduction on current cost by about 20 - 30 per cent)

    Council contractors collect bulky household waste from throughout Tweed Shire over a four to five week period, once a year. Volume of collection pile would remain similar to existing requirements.

    Once-a-year dial-up service (similar cost to current service)

    You contact the Council at any time throughout the year to arrange a day for collection. Note: it might be a number of weeks before the contractors are in your area. Place items on nature strip the day before collection. Restrictions will apply to volume and what can be placed out for collection.

    Two tip vouchers provided with the annual rates notice (significant cost reduction on current service)

    Vouchers will be provided with your rates notice - or following proof of residential address - to allow free disposal of bulky waste at Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre. Up to one trailer load of waste will be accepted twice a year. It will not include disposal of certain
    hazardous materials (eg. asbestos).

    Provision of one tip voucher and one dial-up service per year (Similar cost to current service)

    Comprises above two options. Combining the dial-up and tip voucher services would continue to provide residents with a twice-a-year service.

    None of the above, I can dispose of any unwanted items by other means (reduced cost on rates for waste charge)

    The only place for waste disposal is Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre or local metal recyclers. Surveillance of illegal dumping will increase and Council Compliance Officers are authorised to issue fines.
