Tweed riverbank stabilisation works - Riverside Park Uki
This project was completed in early December 2023.
Tweed Shire Council has started work at Riverside Park, Uki. See the 'news feed' section at the bottom of this page for project updates.
What is happening?
The 2022 flood event caused severe erosion along the middle reaches of the Tweed River downstream of Uki, resulting in major damage to riverbanks, roads, bridges and riparian vegetation.
Tweed riverbank stabilisation works involve restoring the natural channel shape to reduce future flood impacts and rebuilding riverbeds. See 'Photos' for a picture of the map.
Specifically, work will include:
- installing rock revetment along unprotected sections of riverbank
- installing timber piles into the riverbed in rows to capture natural sand and gravel to rebuild riverbed levels
- planting stabilising vegetation to minimise erosion in future floods.
When will the work be completed?
Construction started in September and will be completed in December 2023, weather permitting.
Why are these works happening?
The riverbank stabilisation project is essential to reduce future flood impacts and restore waterway health along the Tweed River. Ongoing straightening of the Tweed River will lead to further loss of riparian vegetation and agricultural lands, increased sediment loads in the Tweed River estuary and major impact on road infrastructure.
Potential impacts
The works require the closure of one lane of Kyogle Road.
During construction, short-term noise and vibration may affect nearby residents. Construction crews will minimise noise and vibration impacts wherever possible.
Work will occur during approved construction hours from to 7 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday and 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays, with no work on Sundays or public holidays.
Further information
Further information about the work and timing will be made available on this project page. Here you will be able to keep up-to-date on construction, timing of work and the overall project.
