We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the upgrade to the 3 bus and taxi shelters located on Wharf Street in Tweed Heads. Thank you for your patience during the construction phase.
Shelters upgraded
The bus shelter at the corner of Wharf and Bay Streets, as well as the 2 shelters in front of Tweed Mall (one for buses and one for taxis), have all been replaced with modern, more accessible designs. These shelters were originally built in the 1990s and had reached the end of their service life.
New features for safer and more convenient shelters
The newly constructed shelters now provide a safer, more convenient waiting area for the community. Key improvements include:
Enhanced lighting for improved safety at all hours.
Mesh backing to protect from the weather while maintaining visibility.
A modern design that requires low maintenance and integrates with surrounding streetscapes.
Accessibility features that promote inclusivity and support the use of public transport.
Community benefits
These upgrades not only provide essential infrastructure but also support the growth of public transport usage. The minimalistic design is consistent with shelters on Griffith Street in Coolangatta, creating a uniform look across the region.
Funding
The project was funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger County Communities Fund, ensuring a long-lasting benefit to the Tweed Heads community.
