Consultation has concluded
Tweed Shire Council was one of the first local governments in New South Wales to introduce a Homelessness Policy in October 2015, demonstrating its commitment to such a significant social issue impacting our local community.
Homelessness or being at risk of homelessness, is often the result of a range of complex issues in a person’s or families lives and can occur at any given time. In 2011, there were 308 people (ABS, 2016) as experiencing homelessness in the Tweed. In 2016, this had increased to 444 people identified as experiencing homelessness. Of particular concern is an increase in the rate of primary homelessness from 14% in 2011 to 48% in 2016.
Council have completed a review of its first policy which gives a picture of the outcomes achieved in partnership with internal and external partners over the 2016 and 2017 calendar years.
The draft policy clearly outlines the role of local government and covers all Council services, in particular: access to Council services and facilities, interacting with homeless people in public places, Council's regulatory activities, strategic land use planning and community development.
The findings of the review and learnings have informed the development of Tweed’s revised policy. The new draft includes the following: updated data; updates to superseded documents and policy; affordable housing section has been converted to new draft Affordable, Attainable and Appropriate Housing Policy Statement and the action plan to be incorporated in to the new Community Development Strategy which stakeholders and community will have the opportunity to have input in to early 2019.
Public Exhibition
From 2 October to 30 October 2018 the draft Homelessness Policy (v2.0) will be on public exhibition, with submissions closing 13 November 2018.
Community and stakeholder input is important. Your feedback will be considered and the final draft will go to Council on 13 December 2018.
