The survey has now closed.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on electric vehicles and the availability of public charging infrastructure.

108 people responded to Council’s ‘Electric Vehicle Charging in the Tweed’ survey. Responses highlighted the spread of community opinion about purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) as their next car purchase: 56.5% in favour, 38.9% not in favour, 4.6% unsure.

For those interested in purchasing an EV as their next car, 72% said that increased availability of public charging stations would influence their decision to purchase an EV.

Just over half of survey respondents thought that Tweed Shire Council should help facilitate more public EV charging for the community, focusing on:

  • identifying potential Council/public land sites suitable for EV charging operators to lease

  • encouraging local businesses to apply for EV charger installation grants

  • seeking grants for public user-pays EV charging

  • promoting awareness of EV charging locations.

Allocating ratepayer funds for user-pays public EV charging was the least preferred option.

The survey findings align with opportunities and initiatives Council is currently pursuing:

  • 7 sites are being considered for pole-mounted ‘destination’ chargers, to be built, owned and operated by a third party selected/managed by Essential Energy

  • Promoting NSW government grants for ‘destination’ chargers via Council’s Business e-newsletter

  • Promoting awareness of EV charging locations via Council’s website and Sustainability & Environment e-newsletter

  • Establishing TSC’s costing and revenue collection systems and third-party monitoring, maintenance, management arrangements for new operational/grant-funded publicly available EV chargers at Council facilities where applicable.

What we are asking for feedback on

Council is looking to understand your opinions on electric vehicles and the availability of public charging infrastructure. We'd like your views on the role that Council should play in enabling this infrastructure for the community.

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) on our roads continues to increase, along with the demand for publicly available charging infrastructure.

Public EV chargers can be used by anyone and provide charging for those without off-street parking and those visiting the region.
