Consultation has concluded

The elevated sewage pump station in Tree Street, Bray Park.

Background

Council is seeking community feedback on the design of three elevated sewer pump stations to be erected in flood-prone areas of the shire.

The existing electrical sewer pump station switchboards at River street, South Murwillumbah, and on Kyogle Road and Old Convent Road at Uki are located below 2017 flood levels.

If it floods, these switchboards may fail and cause the sewer system to overflow. This would adversely affect surrounding streets, properties, parkland and the river.

What is proposed

To mitigate against the risk of flooding and a sewage overflow, it is proposed that an elevated steel platform is constructed at each sewer pump station to raise the switchboards above these flood levels. This would ensure electrical components remain out of water and the sewer system continues to function as required.

The new conventional electrical switchboards will be housed in cabinets on elevated platforms at:

  • H.E Hartmann Park, River Street, Murwillumbah
  • Old Convent Road, Uki, and
  • Kyogle Road, Uki.

The elevated sewer pump stations will be similar to the one at Tree Street in Bray Park pictured on this page. The likely difference is that the three new ones could be painted in a darker colour to better blend into the natural environment.

Have your say on the platform finish

But before we put these elevated sewer pump stations up, we'd like to know what you think about them and how you would suggest we make them 'disappear' in the landscape.

To complete the survey, look at the picture on this page, the location maps in the Photo Gallery folder and then answer the short survey below.

This survey will close on Friday 3 April 2020. The information collected will help us make some important decisions around the final finish to be used on these steel and mesh platforms and any other environmental treatments available to make them less visible in the landscape.
