Project background

The concept plan for Burringbar Memorial Reserve and Masterson Park (image below), a key open space in the much-loved rural area with big village charm.

Community priorities for the village of Burringbar have already progressed through community-led initiatives, including the development of the Burringbar Village Community Plan. Council will expand on those priorities, to ensure the park meets the current and future needs of the local community and visitors to the area.

About the park

Burringbar Memorial Reserve and Masterson Park is the heart of the village. It is a well-used space for family friendly community gatherings, picnicking, rest and relaxation, community events and sharing stories.

Burringbar is soon to be one of the primary nodes along the Northern Rivers Rail Trail -Tweed section (due for completion early 2023). With the opening of the Rail Trail, the park will provide further opportunities for recreation, tourism and improvements to key park facilities including toilet and access improvements and car parking.

The development of a draft concept plan of the park will provide the first opportunity to unite priorities, preserve the heritage and culture whilst ensuring the values of the community are protected and enhanced.

Burringbar Memorial Reserve and Masterson Park is a community asset. Whilst owned by the NSW Government, forming part of the rail corridor, Council is the key land manager. Other key stakeholders include the Pottsville District RSL Sub-Branch (representing Burringbar Sub-Branch) and the Rural Fire Service who both hold leases in defined areas within the open space.

This project is part of our commitment to protect and improve the quality of the Tweed's public open spaces. This commitment and the actions we plan to take are described in the Open Space Strategy (2019–2029).

What happens next?

  • Feedback will inform the development of a draft concept plan
  • Further feedback will inform the development of a final concept plan
  • The plan's implementation is funding dependent
