Community Action Network
Tweed Shire Council is facilitating a Community Action Network to support individuals and community groups in positive steps towards climate action. With a focus on place-based solutions, enabling existing community groups and providing resources and education, Council would like the forums to empower individuals and groups to take action and progress projects.
At each forum, we ask the questions:
- What can I do to take action? (What resources, skills, time or passions can I contribute?)
- What groups already exist responding to this issue?
- What project/s can we progress and what support will make it happen?
Our forum topics are based on the intersection between impact and interest:
- What topics impact climate change and reduce our emissions?
- What topics are community members most passionate about?

At our Community Action Network meeting on Saturday 24 February, participants discussed ideas for how we might make transport more sustainable.
Each group identified an outcome, actionable steps, people and resources needed as well as training and awareness required.

Reinstating the Northern Rivers Rail system as previous.
What are the actionable steps? Feasibility study to determine if old route/connections are optimal. New feasibility study is required given the changes of the Rail Trail and associated infrastructure. Previous actions include: sent an email re Sonora; wrote to the Echo. Who needs to be involved? • Private person who wants to invest >$1m for train line from Mullum to Byron • Project Manager – Byron Shire Council • Northern Rivers Rail lobby group What resources are required? • Private resources • What are the costs? How will we create awareness? Via lobby group (existing) Next steps: • New feasibility study – use case, usage stats

Connect major centres with safe active transport routes. Direct routes that are separated from the road.
What are the actionable steps? 1. Identify existing active transport routes 2. Focus on identifying active safe pathways between Murwillumbah and Tweed 3. Source funding 4. Investigate advocacy groups, community interest support Who needs to be involved? Advocacy groups, community – getting groups together to create one cycling advocacy group Social media communication TSC Service NSW What resources may be required? Funding priority by government – local and state What training or capacity building may be needed? • Lobbying • Advocacy training How will we create awareness? ‘Stay wider of the rider’ sticker competition to create safety awareness. What timeframes, milestones and next steps will we aim for? 100 years!
