Anchorage Islands rotunda

Tweed Shire Council has started significant work around the foreshores of the Anchorage Island Harbour. See the 'news feed' section at the bottom of this page for regular project updates.

What is happening?

Work will include major repairs to the timber boardwalks on the western foreshore and major upgrades to existing rock retaining walls on the eastern foreshore. See map below.

Specifically, work will include:

  • replacing the sub-structure and boardwalk decking timbers..
  • covering the existing boulder retaining wall with a new layer of rock to stabilise it. This has already been undertaken on some Anchorage Island Harbour foreshores.

When will the work start?

Work started in May 2022 and will be completed in stages - see the map below and in the image gallery. More accurate dates and locations of works will be provided on this project page as the work progresses.

Why are these works happening?

These repairs and upgrades are essential to ensure that the foreshore remains structurally sound and safe for the community.

Potential impacts

At times, the work is expected to create construction related impacts such as noise, vehicle and vessel movements, and there will be some interruption to access for pedestrians and vessels within affected areas.

Further information

Further information about the work and timing will be made available on this project page. Here you will be able to keep up-to-date on construction, timing of work and the overall project.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding the proposed works or at any time during construction, contact Council’s Project Manager – Contracts, Ashley Tewes on 02 6670 2480, or email tsc@tweed.nsw.gov.au.

    Hi Bernadette,

    Thank you for your question.

Construction on the rotunda boardwalk is on hold for the time being. Initial quotes to refurbish the rotunda boardwalk came in at considerably more than the available budget, and Council is currently developing a new tender to go to market for an engineering inspection of the structure and a cost estimate to undertake and ultimately to complete the works.

As soon as an estimated start date for the works is confirmed, residents in the Anchorage Island Harbour community will be advised.

Thank you so much for your patience.

    Kind regards,

    Abby - Tweed Shire Council

    Hi Bernadette,

Thank you for your question. The work on the Jetties Boardwalk is expected to take 6 - 8 weeks (weather permitting) and the work on the Rotunda Boardwalk will start once the Jetties Boardwalk is complete.

Any other questions, feel free to reach out.

    Kind regards,

    Tweed Shire Council

  • Share How long have the works been postponed for due to flooding? Will the BLUE Stage 2 be getting a new pathway? If so when will that start as remedial work needs doing 21 March 2022 after the floods. Turf and some soil/path base needs to be done ASAP IF there is no new path for 21- 16 Quayside Court, Anchorage Islands... for many months. Will the rock revetment be finalised before the pathway is fixed? I assume that would be the best course of action. 55363429 on Facebook Share How long have the works been postponed for due to flooding? Will the BLUE Stage 2 be getting a new pathway? Marbing asked about 2 years ago

    Dear Marbing,

    Thank you for your email.

There have been some minor delays to the Anchorage Island Harbour project and stage one works are now scheduled to start on 4 May, weather permitting.

The walkway you are referring to was inspected and noted to be in poor condition with two areas specifically requiring filling. Council’s asset maintenance crew will be responsible for this however, given the scope of the flood recovery works it may take some time but they will get to this as soon as possible.

It is not in the scope of works to replace any of the concrete pathways as part of this project.  The method of fixing the revetment will allow for further settlement behind the crest of the wall as all the voids infill. Work will involve mechanically vibrating the material to try to settle it but installing any rigid pathway prior to the material settling properly would not be advised.

Thank you and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions or by phoning Council on 02 6670 2400.

    Regards,

    Matthew Lee
