We're upgrading John Oxley Park in Chinderah with new picnic tables, shelters and a public toilet, designed to be more flood resilient, welcoming and accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Improved connecting pathways will enhance access to the existing park amenities and the accessible parking bay. Located along the southern shoreline of the Tweed River, next to the popular Chinderah boat ramp, the park will become more inviting, offering opportunities to view the river while supporting the health and wellbeing of Chinderah residents and visitors.

The draft concept plan will be on public exhibition from 26 June to 24 July 2024.

We are also upgrading Turnock Park in Chinderah and will host a consultation event there. Join us for a FREE BBQ breakfast at Turnock Park on Sunday, 21 July, from 9am to 11am. This will be an opportunity to discuss your ideas for both Turnock Park and John Oxley Park with Council staff and provide feedback on the draft plans.

What’s involved

  • Demolition of existing public toilet block and shelters
  • Install one unisex accessible public toilet
  • Park shelters (one large and one small)
  • Picnic tables
  • Linking pathways
  • Rubbish bins

Why it’s happening?

The February 2022 flood damaged the internal and external walls and doors of the public toilet, its fixtures and fittings. The upgrade of public toilet is a high priority in Council’s Open Space Strategy.

Funding

Budget: $347,560

Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.

For more information, please contact Council’s Parks & Active Communities unit on (02) 6670 2400.
