Project update 15 November 2023. Thank you to those who contributed your thoughts and feedback on this project. Due to the detailed nature of community feedback received in relation to the naming of parks in the Tweed a review of the existing Naming Policy is taking place. Relevant stakeholders will be consulted with, and an amended policy presented to Council by mid-2024. This timing is a guideline only and is subject to change.

You are invited to provide feedback on the proposed renaming of the viewing platform in front of the Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club and the park in front of Cabarita Beach Hotel, located at the end of Pandanus Pde, Cabarita Beach from Cabarita Beach Foreshore Reserve to David Rae Place. The proposed renaming is on exhibition for public feedback until the 14 June 2023.

Background

Council has received an application requesting that the viewing platform and park between the Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club, the Cabarita Hotel and the beach (located at the end of Pandanus Pde) be renamed after the late David Rae, who passed away in October 2021.

Taken from the application:

"During his lifetime David spent a lot of time there. In the early 2000's he erected a sign that is still there. The sign has attracted a lot of attention from visitors and help make the adjacent beach a "must see" for locals and tourists.

David moved to Cabarita in the 1970's. He was involved with Lions Club in its foundation. He was very active in the community particularly in maintaining the land behind the Surf Club as public space.

David wrote and published, at his own expense, two books. One on the history of Bogangar and the other on the history of the Coastal Villages. He also wrote a number of poems pertinent to events in Bogangar/Cabarita Beach."

The proposal to name the viewing platform and park to David Rae Place was presented at a Council meeting held on 6 April 2023. At this meeting Council agreed for community consultation to be undertaken to determine the community's support of the proposal.

We value community feedback and are seeking your comment on the proposed renaming.
