The Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program supports suburban landholders who provide native habitat in their backyard.

In cities and suburban areas, backyard habitat provides an important sanctuary for native animals, particularly when habitat in surrounding areas is damaged or lost. Pockets of habitat provide important refuges for wildlife.

Neighbours, each with backyard habitat, provide important corridors that enable wildlife to move through the landscape to find niches providing shelter, food and mates.


Participants in the program receive:

  • factsheets and other information
  • a great sign for your letterbox or gate
  • opportunities to network with other people who love native animals
  • invitations to free workshops
  • the opportunity to share pictures of your favourite wildlife with other members

    Attention all those looking for a practical planting guide for the Tweed.

    If you want to go one step up from our Great Plants for Backyard Habitat handout, Council helping to develop a planting booklet to accompany the Native Species Planting Guide.

    In its current form, this amazing guide provides information on 1580 plant species. It consists of a Native Species List in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, a report outlining how each field in the spreadsheet was populated and a guide to assist those unfamiliar with using spreadsheets.

    So, if you want to select some salt-tolerant plants with bird-attracting flowers that don’t grow higher than eight metres, this guide will help you make your choices.

    The final booklet will summarise key information from the planting guide in a user-friendly format handy for every gardener. It will be a great resource when planning to build a garden from scratch or for extending an existing backyard habitat.

    The Urban Wildlife Gardens website is all about promoting the natural world in urban settings.

    Like the Backyard Habitat for Wildlife Program, it helps people focus on ways they can provide habitat for native fauna in their backyards and reconnect with the natural world.

    The locally-run website contains a range of great information applicable to Tweed Shire gardens, such as a garden checklist and tips on what to plant and other ways of attracting wildlife. Take a look.
