Enhancing Wollumbin Street, Murwillumbah

The aim of the Wollumbin Street Beautification Project was to improve street amenity and pedestrian use between Commercial Road and Brisbane Street.

By adding trees, garden beds and street furniture, the project encourages pedestrian traffic and supports Council’s long term commitment to stimulate our local economy.

Trees were planted to add shade and improve street appeal, and new seating encourages people to sit and feel welcomed in town.

The project visually links the town’s entry point, main shopping centre, regional park, and arts and heritage precinct.

The project was funded by the Your High Street grant program, which supports councils across NSW to make permanent improvements to the amenity and functionality of their High Streets.

Works started in December 2021 and were completed in August 2022.

Project success and evaluation

The works have created a greener, more welcoming and vibrant public space in Murwillumbah.

The project has been evaluated by Council, and evidence shows more people are using the area, day and night.

The area feels more welcoming and the new seats are being used. People are able to better connect with each other and enjoy the town.

Works carried out for the Wollumbin Street Beautification Project include:

  • Ten trees were planted to provide cooling natural shade and greenery.
  • New garden beds were painted by local artists, adding splashes of colour to the street.
  • Accessible seating was added, to encourage people to sit and enjoy their time in town.
  • Footpaths and a pedestrian crossing were upgraded, improving pedestrian flow and access to shops and offices.
  • New rubbish bins were installed, to encourage people to keep the area free of litter.
  • The existing roundabout at Brisbane Street and Wollumbin Street was refurbished.
Before and after photos that highlight how much nicer the area is with the new plants and seating. Before and after. The Wollumbin Street Beautification Project has made Murwillumbah feel more welcoming.

Community consultation

The local community was asked to provide feedback in an online survey in November 2021. This was reviewed and considered as part of the Draft Streetscape Plan and the final design.

Local businesses and residents were encouraged to provide feedback to help create a shared vision for the street works.

A Community Information Session was held at the Murwillumbah Farmers Market on Wednesday 10 November 2021.
