Bus shelter in front of Tweed Mall

Roads campaign identifier

As part of our commitment to providing reliable essential services and infrastructure to the people of Tweed, we will soon be upgrading 3 taxi and bus shelters located on Wharf Street in Tweed Heads.

Shelters to be upgraded

We recently assessed the condition of 3 bus and taxi shelters on Wharf Street in Tweed Heads. The locations include the bus shelter on the corner of Wharf and Bay streets and the shelters in front of Tweed Mall on Wharf Street, one serving buses and the other serving taxis.

Location of the 3 shelters on a map

These shelters were built in the 1990s as part of the precinct's streetscaping. While they are still functional, they are nearing the end of their useful lives and the current design looks outdated and needs to be replaced.

Safer and more convenient shelters

The investment in constructing 3 high-quality public transport assets creates a lasting community benefit. We explored various options and evaluated them based on user safety, design, aesthetics and ongoing maintenance costs.

A minimalistic design has been selected that offers high-quality structures and requires low maintenance. This design resembles the shelters on Griffith Street in Coolangatta by the City of Gold Coast, ensuring a consistent appearance across the border.

Features include:

  • Upgrading lighting to improve safety.
  • Mesh backing provides protection from the weather while still allowing for clear visibility.
  • Infrastructure is flexible and adaptable for future requirements.
  • Appealing and accessible bus and taxi shelters support and encourage more people to use public transport.
  • The design of shelters and surrounding footpaths supports a diverse and inclusive community lifestyle.
  • Providing opportunities to add value to shelters with additional facilities for users.
  • Reduction in maintenance and ongoing cost.

Funding and more information

NSW Government logoWe have secured funding from the NSW Government's Stronger County Communities Fund to upgrade these 3 taxi and bus shelters.

Works that may disrupt traffic during construction will be published on our roadworks and closures page.
