Council investigated provision for car parking on community land immediately adjacent to the north of Salt Surf Life Saving Club.Car parking proposal

Council is investigating options to provide additional public car parking spaces next to SSLSC, which would allow the SSLSC building to be considered for additional uses. Community land on the northern side of the club, off Bells Boulevard, is the proposed location of the additional parking.

These spaces would add to 196 Council owned parking spaces around Salt Central Park and 95 parking spaces on privately owned land to service the Mantra Resort, hotel, shops and restaurants.

Unfortunately, no reliable data on parking use in the area is available and due to COVID-19 restrictions impacting visitation to the Salt Precinct, it has not been practical to undertake a parking study.

Background

In May 2018, SSLSC was granted an amended consent for demolition, alterations and additions (DA13/0119.04). The completed works included an addition of an upper storey and deck.

The consent contains several conditions that limit the use of the building for bona fide club and member activities only. This means that the club is currently unable to use the building for activities and uses that are open to the general public.

The club says it needs to open commercial activities to non-members in the upper level and deck areas of the building, so it can afford to provide its community service activities.

A modification to and/or a new consent will be required for this to happen. Changing the way the building is used has an impact on the demand for nearby parking. Council must consider what car parking is available nearby before approving any changes. For example, using the building as a function centre will generate a greater need for car parking than the building's current use by members only. The Tweed Development Control Plan Section A2 - Site Access and Parking Code guide Council's decision making on these matters.
