Expressions of Interest are now open to join the Koala Beach Wildlife and Habitat Management Committee.
Koala Beach is a residential development located between Pottsville and Hastings Point on the Tweed Coast.
The development includes 270 hectares of bushland reserved for nature conservation and is home to at least 24 threatened species and ecological communities.
Koala Beach was designed to ensure wildlife and habitats within and around the estate continued into the future, alongside the residential development.
Management Committees are an important part of Council’s commitment to community engagement. They are defined as a group of suitably experienced people appointed to give operational support, considered advice, and recommendations to Management (officers) for an operational purpose for a specific program area or project.
Why does Koala Beach have a Management Committee?
The Committee is one formal way that residents and landowners of Koala Beach Estate can provide input to the management of the unique environmental values of the estate. Wildlife and habitat management plans guide how the environmental values are managed. Each property owner in Koala Beach Estate pays a special rate which contributes to this ongoing management.
The Committee’s role is to provide advice and recommendations to management on:
Wildlife and Habitat Management plans and reports affecting Koala Beach Estate.
Managing and mitigating threats to native wildlife arising from the residential areas (built environment) of the Koala Beach Estate.
Community engagement activities as they relate to the wildlife and habitat of Koala Beach Estate.
Allocation of the Koala Beach Estate Special Rate.
What does a Committee Member need to do?
Member responsibilities include:
Attend scheduled meetings (minimum 2 per year).
Review relevant wildlife and habitat management plans, reports, special rate financial reports and other documents prior to the meeting.
Support Council adopted plans, reports and expenditures.
The community members selected shall be ratepayers or residents of the Koala Beach Estate selected on the basis of their capacity and demonstrated ability to enact change, influence and/or interact with the local community. Read more.
