A written request was submitted to Council by a member of the community to name the viewing platform and parkland and was presented at a Council meeting on 6 April 2023.

An application was received requesting that the viewing platform and parkland in between the Cabarita Beach Hotel and Cabarita Beach, being Lot 7010 DP1055324, Tweed Coast Reserve Trust land managed by Tweed Shire Council, be named after the late David Rae, who passed away in October 2021.  

The request reads as follows:

l (i) a clear description of the public park to be named, including street address, locality and/or property particulars; 

The viewing platform currently under repair on the beachfront at the end of Pandanus Parade Cabarita Beach 

 2 (ii) the proposed name and the reason for the choice of that proposed name particularly if the proposed name relates to flora, fauna, or contains any descriptive element relating to the Tweed Shire area;

3 (iii) any history of the land set aside for public park relative to the name proposed; 

During his lifetime David spent a lot of time there. 

4. (iv) any history or historical involvement with the Tweed Shire area of the person or organisation after whom the naming is sought; 

David moved to Cabarita in the 1970's. He was involved with Lions Club in its foundation. He was very active in the community particularly in the maintaining the land behind the Surf Club as public space. 

5. 6 7 (v) contributions by the person or organisation to the Tweed Shire community which may warrant consideration for the proposed named (vi) any history of service to the Tweed Shire community that was on a voluntary basis; (vii) any detailed information in relation to the service and its contribution to the betterment of the Tweed Shire community.

David wrote and published at his own expense two books one on the history of Bogangar and the other on the history of the Coastal Villages. He also wrote a number of poems pertinent to events in Bogangar/Cabarita Beach e.g. " They are tearing down the pub at Bogangar" which was published in the press. 

I think that you would know of David Rae. David has been a resident of Cabarita Beach since 1977. During that time he has been very active in community matters and has given freely of his time to worthy causes. He has also written a comprehensive history of the Tweed Coast Beaches and another of the surrounding villages. Both these books were done in his own time and at his own expense and are a very valuable historical record. 

He was very active in promoting the " Village Green " concept in Pandanus Avenue using his considerable vocal skills at many of the rallies that were held at the time when it was possible that the area would be developed as bricks and mortar. David died at 2 am on October 27th after a short illness. He was 93. A small committee of local Cabarita residents believe his contribution should be recognised.
